S7-400 Full Series Phase-Out: CPU 410 or S7-1500
Siemens SIMATIC S7-400 Full Series Enters Phase-Out — PCS 7 Moves to CPU 410, S7-1500 Takes Over General Applications Published: 2026-09-17 | Category: Product & Technology | Keywords: S7-400 Full Series · Industry News · Phase-Out & Replacement Contact: [email protected] | WhatsApp: +8615272221149
The classic large rack PLC SIMATIC S7-400 enters full series phase-out. Siemens clarifies the scope. CPU 410 for PCS 7 process control will stay on market. General automation projects will shift to S7-1500. Siemens offers up to 10 years of spare parts support.
01 Phase-Out Range: S7-400 Retired, CPU410 Remains
S7-400 series starts phase-out together with S7-300.
- Phase-out list: CPU 412/414/416/417, 400H redundant, 400F/FH failsafe and related modules
- Not discontinued: CPU 410 / 410-5H, the core controller for PCS 7
- Spare parts supply for S7-400 will last past 2035
The old rack structure cannot support TSN, OPC UA and modern industrial security requirements. This drives the product upgrade.
02 PCS7 Upgrade Route: Switch to CPU 410-5H
For PCS7 users with S7-400H redundant systems, CPU 410-5H is the official replacement. It keeps the high availability redundancy design of S7-400H. Synchronization modules and fiber setups can be reused. It supports existing PCS7 software and libraries to protect your software investment. Check official compatibility documents before replacement.
03 General Automation: Migrate to S7-1500
For non-PCS7 large automation projects, S7-1500 is the successor platform on TIA Portal.
- CPU 1518-4 PN/DP: High-performance replacement for top S7-400 models
- CPU 1518HF /1518F: For safety-related failsafe applications
- S7-1500R/H: Redundant solution equal to S7-400H for critical production lines S7-1500 has built-in PROFINET, web server and OPC UA for digitalization.
04 Distributed I/O Migration for ET 200M
ET200M I/O modules also follow the platform transition plan.
- PCS7 process control: ET200M upgrades to ET200SP HA, with hot swap and redundant power
- Factory automation: ET200M migrates to ET200MP or ET200SP ET200M spare parts are guaranteed until October 2033.
05 Lifecycle & Spare Parts Rules
Siemens defines clear lifecycle milestones.
- PM400: Phase-out announcement, items still available for new orders
- PM410: Formal discontinuation, only spare parts sales
- PM490: End of spare parts supply and technical support S7-400 spare support extends beyond 2035 for smooth equipment transition.
06 Migration Tools & Methods
PCS7 users adopt CPU410-5H with matching sync modules and fiber cables. For general automation, TIA Portal has built-in PLC migration tools. It converts most S7-300/400 programs for S7-1500. Manual checks on partial instructions are needed. Two recommended plans: replace I/O first then CPU, or full swap during plant shutdown.
07 Project Timeline
- 2023-10: PM400 release for S7-300/ET200M, S7-400 phase-out starts
- 2025-10: PM410 formal discontinuation for S7-300/ET200M
- 2026 onward: S7-400 modules enter spare-parts phase batch by batch
- 2033-10: ET200M spare parts cutoff date
- 2035+: End boundary of S7-400 official availability
08 Impacts for Different Users
Process industry PCS7 users: Plan upgrade to CPU410-5H, reuse software assets. Large production line owners: Prepare S7-1500 migration and build TIA Portal environment early. Procurement teams: Reserve critical S7-400 spare parts in advance to prevent downtime. System integrators: S7-400 migration service brings new business opportunities.
