Lead: The SIMATIC S7-300 full series, which has served global industrial automation for more than a quarter of a century, has reached the final stage of its phase-out: the official discontinuation announcement was released in October 2023, production formally ended on October 1, 2025, and spare-parts supply will continue until 2033. The officially designated successor platform, S7-1500, takes over with higher performance, integrated PROFINET and stronger cybersecurity — opening the last upgrade window for existing S7-300 production lines.
01 Phase-out Schedule Confirmed
Siemens has confirmed a two-stage phase-out timeline for the SIMATIC S7-300 system and the ET 200M I/O system:
- PM400 (product phase-out announcement): Effective October 1, 2023
- PM410 (formal discontinuation): Effective October 1, 2025
- Spare-parts supply: Approximately 10 years after discontinuation, i.e., until October 2033 (at least 1 year in the “New Part” phase)
Discontinuation does not mean immediate disappearance: S7-300 components remained orderable as new parts for roughly two years after the announcement, followed by long-term supply through the spare-parts channel.
02 Scope: Full S7-300 CPU Range and ET 200M
This phase-out covers the core components of the entire S7-300 series:
- S7-300 CPU range: From the entry-level CPU 312 to the high-performance CPU 319, including compact 31xC, failsafe 31xF, and redundancy/technology variants
- ET 200M distributed I/O system: Interface modules IM 153 and associated signal modules
- Function modules (FM), communication processors (CP) and others are phased out progressively per the official component list
For the large number of S7-300 lines still running worldwide, maintenance and spare-part strategies must be replanned against this schedule.
03 Successor Platform: S7-1500 Takes Over
The S7-1500 is the core controller of the TIA Portal platform, designed by Siemens to replace the S7-300/400, with significant advantages over the S7-300:
- Processing speed: Up to approximately 10× faster than equivalent S7-300 CPUs
- Memory capacity: Data blocks up to 10 MB (S7-300 typically 64 KB)
- Integrated PROFINET: 2-port switch, IRT isochronous real-time, native communication capability
- Built-in web server: Web-based diagnostics and data access out of the box
- Integrated security functions: Access protection, firmware protection and enhanced industrial cybersecurity
04 CPU Mapping Reference
Siemens’ official hardware mapping from S7-300 to S7-1500 (for migration selection):
- CPU 312, 314 → map to S7-1500 CPU 1511-1 PN
- CPU 315 → maps to S7-1500 CPU 1513-1 PN
- CPU 317 → maps to S7-1500 CPU 1516-3 PN/DP
- Distributed I/O: ET 200M migrates to ET 200MP / ET 200SP
Final selection should be evaluated against hardware requirements such as communication interfaces, processing speed and memory capacity.
05 Two Official Migration Paths
Siemens officially recommends two migration approaches from S7-300 to S7-1500:
- Step-by-step migration (small steps, fast iterations): Replace distributed I/O stations (ET 200M / ET 200S) in batches first, then replace the CPU last. Each change is small, risk is controllable, but the construction period is longer
- Full migration: Replace CPU and I/O together — shorter period, larger one-time investment, suited to a centralized shutdown window
On the software side, TIA Portal provides a PLC migration function that automatically adapts S7-300/400 programs to the S7-1500 system architecture; some instructions, organization blocks and hardware configurations require manual verification.
06 Timeline
- 2023-10-01: Official phase-out announcement (PM400) effective for S7-300 and ET 200M
- 2025-10-01: Formal discontinuation (PM410) effective for S7-300 and ET 200M
- 2023 to 2025: Components still orderable as new parts for about two years after the announcement
- 2033-10: End of spare-parts supply (maximum guarantee line)
- Ongoing: Full S7-1500 series supply and migration support
07 Impact on Users
- Existing lines: Spare parts remain guaranteed until 2033, but key spares should be locked in early; the longer migration is delayed, the higher the program and data migration cost
- New machines: Choose the S7-1500 or S7-1200 platform directly to avoid facing a generational change right after commissioning
- System integrators: Demand for S7-300-to-S7-1500 migration services keeps rising; TIA Portal migration capability is a core skill
- Spare-parts trade: Original S7-300 components maintain stable demand until 2033, making genuine sourcing channels and inventory management increasingly valuable
